Flying In: Golfito (GLF) and Puerto Jiménez (PJM) Airports
The absolute fastest and most premium way to reach the Gulf is by air. From the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José, you can book a quick, 50-minute domestic flight via Sansa Airlines or Green Airways.
- Fly into Golfito (GLF) if you are staying on the eastern mainland side.
- Fly into Puerto Jiménez (PJM) if your lodge is on the western Osa Peninsula side.
Driving from San José and the Central Pacific
For those who prefer to travel at their own pace, renting a 4x4 and driving is a stunning visual experience. The drive from San José takes roughly 5 to 6 hours. You will travel down Route 34 (The Costanera Sur), a beautiful coastal highway that takes you past popular central hubs like Manuel Antonio, Dominical, and Uvita before the landscape opens up into the wilder, greener south.
Water Taxis and Boat Transfers
Once you arrive, navigating between the two main hub towns is incredibly easy. Rather than driving hours around the perimeter of the gulf, a network of rapid water taxis operates between the Golfito municipal dock and Puerto Jiménez. Theres a private and public service. The private service takes 25-40 minutes while public 35-50, depending on the day's weather.

We offer flexible departures to make your day as seamless as possible. We typically depart from the municipal dock in Golfito or from Puerto Jiménez.
What kind of boat do you use, and is there shade?
We operate a comfortable, locally designed boat perfectly suited for the calm waters of the fjord. Our boat features a canopy that provides ample shade from the tropical sun, comfortable seating, and an open layout that allows for easy, 360-degree wildlife viewing and photography.
Is there a bathroom on board the boat?
Because our boats are designed for intimate, shallow-water exploration and gliding quietly through mangroves, they do not feature an onboard bathroom. When nature calls, we keep it wild and authentic—a quick, refreshing dip in the ocean is the way to go! It is all part of the raw, unfiltered adventure of exploring a tropical fjord.
How do I get to Golfo Dulce from San José, Alajuela, Heredia, or Guanacaste?
Depending on where your Costa Rica journey begins, here are the most efficient routes to reach us in the south:
From San José, Alajuela, or Heredia (The Central Valley): The most seamless option is taking a 50-minute domestic flight from San José (SJO) directly to Golfito or Puerto Jiménez via Sansa or Green Airways. If driving, take Route 27 out of the Central Valley, connect to Route 34 (The Costanera Sur) moving past Uvita, and continue south. The total drive time is roughly 5.5 to 6 hours on fully paved roads.
From Guanacaste (Liberia, Tamarindo, Nosara): Driving directly from the far northwest down to the deep south is a massive 8 to 10-hour road trip. We highly recommend driving or taking a local flight back to San José (SJO), then boarding a quick connecting flight down to the gulf. If you do choose to drive, take Route 1 south to Route 23, merge onto Route 27, and take Route 34 all the way down the Pacific coast.
How many days should I plan to spend in the Golfo Dulce region?
We recommend dedicating 3 to 5 days to fully experience the region. This gives you ample time to enjoy a dedicated whale or dolphin safari, explore the deep mangrove channels on a high-tide tour, and spend a relaxed afternoon beach hopping without feeling rushed by the tropical weather patterns.
Are there ATMs, grocery stores, and medical services available near the gulf?
Yes. Both Golfito (on the east side of the gulf) and Puerto Jiménez (on the west side) are fully developed local hub towns. You will find multiple banks with 24/7 ATMs, fully stocked modern supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations, and medical clinics. However, because many of the high-end eco-lodges situated along the remote shorelines of the gulf are isolated and accessible only by boat, we always advise withdrawing local currency (Colones) and grabbing any specific personal necessities before boarding your boat transfer.
When is the best time of year to book a boat tour in Golfo Dulce?
The gulf is beautiful year-round, but the seasons offer different experiences. The dry season provides the best underwater visibility for snorkeling and longer days for our culinary beach experiences. The rainy season brings a lush, vibrant energy to the jungle and marks the arrival of humpback whales, though snorkeling conditions can be slightly more challenging. We embrace both—it’s just a different kind of beauty.
What is your cancellation policy if the weather is bad?
We respect the ocean. If the sea conditions are unsafe or the weather simply won't allow for a good experience, we will work with you to reschedule your charter. If your travel itinerary does not allow for a new date, we will fully refund your deposit.
