Pod of dolphins swimming towards Rio Leon Tours boat in Golfo Dulce

Marine
Wildlife

Golfo Dulce is a remarkably rich marine ecosystem and one of the most biodiverse places in the country. Its protected Marine Mammal Area is home to dolphins, sea turtles, rays, manta rays, and many other species. In season, whales also pass through the gulf. Every day is different, which is part of what makes time on the water here so special.

Dolphin
Encounters

Golfo Dulce is home to resident dolphin pods that live here year-round, including bottlenose and spotted dolphins. They often appear during a day on the water — sometimes following the boat, sometimes feeding or moving in small groups nearby. Each encounter is different, and always respectful, with space for them to move freely in their environment.

Whale
Seasons

Golfo Dulce is visited by humpback whales during two migration seasons. Southern hemisphere whales are typically present from July to November, while northern hemisphere whales pass through from December to April. These protected waters serve as a resting and breeding area, making sightings possible during much of the year.

Whale
Watching

During migration periods, humpback whales can be seen in the gulf as they travel through these warm, sheltered waters. We keep a quiet, respectful distance, focusing on natural behavior rather than pursuit. Along the way, other marine life such as dolphins, turtles, rays, and occasionally whale sharks may also be part of the experience.

The emphasis is always on observation — not interference — allowing encounters to unfold naturally in this protected marine environment.

A sanctuary for marine life

The waters of Golfo Dulce form a rare and protected ecosystem where marine life moves freely between rainforest and sea. Every outing is different — shaped by season, tide, and chance encounters with the wildlife that calls this place home.
